Friday Night Smack Talk – Special Guest

Damn.  I just spent an hour trying to get a friggin video site that works.  I don’t know if it was my area and the bandwidth was just flooded, but I couldn’t get anything working.  Finally TubeMogul.com came through after the 18th time attempting to upload.  I wanted to do a little video update for you guys since it’s been a while and there have been some new faces showing up on the comments.  Mad link love, mad updates with the blogosphere and all the craziness that’s been going on – I also have a special guest at the end, someone who I know all you guys have been wanting to see!  Is it Veronica?  No, she fell asleep on the couch as I was recording this.  Maybe I’ll film myself putting backing powder in her hair and post that up tomorrow.. I guess you’ll have to wait and see.  Have a great weekend everyone!

Cheers,

Elijah

Real Social Networking

Real Social NetworkingIt’s funny, because when I think of social networking in 2008 and what it means to the web 2.0 crowd, all I see is a bunch of people hiding behind computers with a jpeg for a face, and a keyboard for a mouth.  We all fall into that category of course, because our business is based on the computer – but does it have to remain there?  I look at someone like Lynn Terry from ClickNewz.com who, whenever she’s attending an industry event, invites her readers to meet up with her for lunch if any of them are local to where the event is happening.  Talk about extending yourself and increasing availability – Lynn is connected with some of the top dogs in Internet marketing and still makes it a priority to pow wow with her available readers whenever she’s on the road.  I definitely encourage you to extend yourself to your regular blog readers and swap phone numbers.  Get acquainted with each other because the relationships we build now are the most important, and going beyond the computer is something I practice as often as possible.

Let’s take a closer look at the term “social networking” a little closer:  You have social, or socializing, which is an interaction between 2 or more people without any defined objective or purpose – you’re simply talking for the sake of the moment.  On the other end you have networking, which can start off as socializing but eventually will lead to end-goals from that particular conversation.  If you caught that last bit, then you will know that the core difference between socializing and networking is the objective or goal – why are you talking to this person?  One can argue that every interaction has some sort of objective whether it be to prevent that greasy guy at the bar from approaching you, or to keep your wife occupied while your friend sneaks your golf clubs into his truck – because your wife thinks you have a doctors appointment and your friend is driving you.

Learn to balance the two…

With so many mediums of social networking available on the web, it can become quite challenging to find a healthy balance between the two.  One thing I haven’t done yet is download some sort of third party Twitter application like TweetDeck, because I don’t see anything positive coming out of me having access to Twitter every minute of every day.  Is it really that important that I respond to tweets or direct messages right away?  No.  Do I really need to have Skype open all day while I work online?  No.  If anything of dire importance needs my attention I will either be notified as soon as I log in (literally) or that individual whom I am waiting to hear from will contact me by other means, like phone or personal email.  Choose when to be connected and when to skillfully disconnect in order to promote a more productive day.

The reality…

Unfortunately, most of what we do online in regards to social networking and communication is merely glorified socializing – and that my friends is the ultimate enemy of productivity.  When you choose to engage in social interaction, be conscious of the goals and objectives behind that encounter.  Why are you talking to this person?  If there is a specific reason, make sure it gets addressed within the first 2 minutes of digital conversation and if someone wants to tell you about their trip to the petting zoo, let them know that you can’t chat right now and to send you a brief email telling you all about it.  Knowing when you make your exit will greatly improve your online performance, but also set the guidelines for others to know what to expect from you.

Try to encourage more networking and less socializing, and you soon realize how much time you were wasting doing the later.  I know it’s hard to not jump on every new micro-blogging platform that enters the market, because we’re all nerds for that type of shit!  It’s what we look forward to!  Just know when to bow out gracefully if you do happen to indulge on a daily basis.  Having an addiction to social networking sites is a serious problem – not only will it potentially cripple your business, but your home life as well, so be careful!

Should Every Blog Provide Advertising?

Blog AdvertisingIt’s getting to that point – regarding traffic and stats – that Veronica and I should start to think about monetizing our blog beyond an Adsense block and contextual links.  It has become common practice that blogs of a certain stature are expected to provide some sort of advert options for others to purchase throughout the site.  It seems to be in our best interest that we should take advantage of this opportunity to open up our canvas for potential advertisers, while paying some bills at the same time.  Let’s take a look at what options we have…

As you can see by our template, it’s not very accommodating to the regular 125×125 ad farm that a lot of WordPress themes have – which I’m glad.  I have two square banners up right now, and I don’t really see any more than 3 or 4 square banners in total for that area in the right sidebar, arranged in a vertical manner.  Another option would be to provide ad space before/after posts but I’m not too sure how I feel about that – the awesome theme we use is vibrant and accommodating, and the last thing I want to do is fuck it all up with ad space.

So what do we do?

I feel much more comfortable leaving this decision up to youour readers.  We want to know how you feel with advertising on blogs, what you use to manage your ads, and based on our theme what you think would work best to combine ad options with our sites current vibe and functionality.  If you know me at all, you know I’m not a fan of what I like to call “ad-blogs” and that will not happen with TAHC.com!  I give you guys the power to determine how we go about doing this.  Feel free to send us an email in the contact section above, or simply reply to this post with a comment!

Elijah

20 Questions With Mark Hansen From TheNicheStoreBuilder.com

Round three with my 20 Questions interview series, and I have to say that I’m surprised with not only the response, but the fact that established affiliate marketers and Internet veterans are actually agreeing to participate!  So far we’ve had the pleasure of getting to know Alan LeStourgeon from AffiliateConfession.com and Paul Piotrowski from InspiredMoneyMaker.com on a more intimate level, and they were both really awesome interviews.

Today I am going to introduce you to someone who has played a very important role in my budding career as a work-at-home ninja marketer.  His name is Mark Hansen and he runs TheNicheStoreBuilder.com where you will find endless information on finding niche markets, keyword research techniques, and the ever popular eBay affiliate site building script Build A Niche Store.

Mark’s blog is where I began my journey online and where I learned almost everything I know about Wordtracker, generating organic traffic and spotting niche markets.  Since we started this blog I have had the opportunity to become better acquainted with Mark via email, and you can expect to hear more about him in the next few weeks as we have some cool little “projects” that we’re going to be working on together.  He is a super cool dude, and a great teacher – even though he thinks differently about that!

So without further ado I give you 20 Questions With Mark Hansen From TheNicheStoreBuilder.com:

1.  Who are you and what do you do?

I am Mark Hansen aka The Niche Store Builder.  Thanks to Al Gore, I too, discovered the Internet back in 1993 the same way most did, on a Packard Bell 25mhz home PC dialing in through Prodigy. I became so encompassed with how to build a website at that time, I decided to learn how to do it! After 14 years of running my own web design business, the time was right in 2007 to take the leap into affiliate marketing, build a small network of my own sites, and start sharing everything I know with others… thus the birth of The Niche Store Builder site. In total, I have developed about 1200 websites (not counting affiliate sites of my own) ranging from basic business card type sites, to very extensive air charter reservation and estimating applications for the web.

If I had to choose one thing that really drives me every day, it’s search engine ranking! If I can make one of my own, or my customers managed sites, rank in the top 5 of the serp’s… I have done it right! When you can beat hundreds or thousands at the same game… it is a great feeling of accomplishment, usually followed quickly with financial rewards!

2.  In 1,000,000 words or less describe how you made your first profit on the Internet.

Buddys Baby Products… It was the first commercial website I developed in 1994!  I remember having one of my own boys record a 5 second audio clip that was used on the site to introduce the lineup. “Hi – I’m Buddy and Welcome to My Website” it was typical of most websites you saw in the early days… full of images and HUGE files that never got viewed due to dial up access anyhow! Fortunately, the site sold spit-up bibs, which I am sure most people did when they first viewed it! I still get a weak stomach thinking of that site!

3.  I’ve noticed that you have a great head of hair, does that mean you’re against wearing hats?

I am probably one of the only people I know that actually reads the directions on the shampoo bottle! Work the lather deep into the scalp, rinse thoroughly and repeat as needed… how friggin boring is that! I mean, you just squirt out a handful, work it in, rinse it out and your done right? Not me… gotta read the directions on EVERYTHING I do! Which is why I am not a hat wearer, no directions!

4.  Give me a brief description of your home office, or lack thereof?

Ahhh – My pride and joy! Wait, it’s in here under this mess somewhere! Big messy desk, dual 24 inch widescreen monitors in my office make it very easy to develop anything where the web is concerned. I also keep a laptop next to my recliner in the TV room. If I could recommend 1 thing that makes life easier, figure out how to setup 2 monitors on your system! Your workspace is instantly doubled and even if you’re just killing time reading directions, you get twice as much at once!

5.  Coffee or tea?

Coffee – by the gallon, all day long! I did have to switch to half-decaf though, my doctor said I am a bit hyper and drink too much! I wish they made coffee flavored Popsicles!

6.  If you could have 15 minutes with any successful businessman or woman, who would it be and why?

To me, success is not based on the money in the bank. it is based on the practices that led up to that money being there. I would love to talk to someone like Warren Buffet, but I think they would talk beyond me. Right now, I would like 15 minutes with Jeremy Schoemaker aka Shoemoney. He is more in line with the regular guy like myself, and could help me with some ideas I have for a new website, before I make costly mistakes!

7.  Early bird, evening owl, or midnight marauder?

All three! My mind is always running at 150mph… No alarm clock here, I usually wake to a dog licking my face between 6-7am and work until my eyes burn late at night! Jump into bed around 11pm and within 30 minutes, I am back in front a PC doing just “One more Thing” before I can finally sleep!

8.  Name the artist and title of the last full song you listened to.

Buck Cherry – Crazy Bitch! It was in the shuffle of the iPod on the way home from my mid-afternoon drive yesterday!

9.  In your opinion, name 3 tools or services that are necessary to becoming successful at niche marketing.

1 – High Speed Internet access! I actually watch that stat on my own site and wonder how 14% of visitors can survive with dial up!
2 – WordTracker for keyword research! I have tried almost every keyword research tool out there and have subscriptions to many right now. In the end, I return to WordTracker every single time!
3 – A monthly subscription to a rag-mag like People, US, or even Teen Magazine! Not only does it make for good ‘bathroom’ reading, you will always spot niche trends here first!

10.  What was the worst Halloween costume you ever had?

Ironically, it was also the easiest! I cut 2 holes in a paper bag, pulled it over my head and went to a party as the unknown comic! I have wore some very interesting get-ups in the past, but since I don’t know the age demographic of your readers, I won’t go there!

11.  Did your mom ever cut your hair as a kid? My mother destroyed mine.

My mother and older sister went to beauty school together when I was a teenager… my head became their dummy! I have been permed, up-do’d, and literally lost chunks of meat off the ridges of my ears! The things we will do for gas money as kids huh?

12.  I’ve heard rumors that Facebook Ads is run by 13 year olds who play hacky sack in between approving ads. I’m really good at hacky sack, do you think they’d give me a job?

Hmmm HackyAds.com, a place to kick around new ad ideas! You might be onto something with that!! I imagine a good Youtube video resume would be in order during the application process!

13.  Sean Connery, Roger Moore, or Pierce Brosnan?

I would have to say Roger Moore. They should have chipped off the mole though.

14.  I know things have been bumpy for a lot of Build A Niche Store users over the last few months, where do you see the future of BANs going?

Honestly, if you forget you are developing a BANS site and focus on the content and overall visitor experience, you will be fine. It’s the point/click/done sites that have to worry! BANS is a very powerful application and simply took the place of “made for adsense” sites that were all the rage a few years ago with domain owners wanting to monetize parked domains. It was only a matter of time before Google and other engines took notice of the BanSpam in the index.

If you spend 30 minutes every day on _each_ of your BANS sites… you won’t have much to worry about! If you spend 2 hours every day pushing out new bans sites with no original content, you might as well just go to Vegas!  The BANS developers are truly listening to the needs of the users, so I think they will respond with better, more flexible version in the future. I just don’t know if it will be ePN only. In my opinion, they would enrich the product by making it work with many product feeds and affiliate programs, versus being tied to only ebay.

15.  I recently had my 27th birthday, do you remember what you were doing at 27?

We have 7 kids… you wanna guess?

16.  Like many others, I learned niche marketing and keyword research from your blog, and you’re a great teacher! Do you ever feel like Mr. Miyagi from the Karate Kid movies?

Truthfully, I think I am a horrible teacher! I jump around too much and stray off topic in the videos and series of posts! I need to sit down and watch Karate Kid to get some good focus training of my own! On a good note though… I can wax the hell out of my car!

17.  In 1,000,000 words or less explain why most people fail to make a living online.

This goes along with #9 – someone should sell a service or tool for patience! Too many people develop a site today and then watch the stats for 2-3 weeks, only to be disappointed with the results and give up on it. Instead of focusing efforts on growing the site, they move on to another one and repeat the same process endlessly! In the end, they have 20-30 websites doing nothing for them and they think affiliate website marketing is horrible!

Everyone has been led to think they can put up a site and it will just start earning money. It’s just not going to happen like that… and you have to sweat some of the labors of trial and error before you ever start realizing success. Those who give up early are the ones that populate the expired domain market to the tune of 95,000+ expired domains EVERY DAY!

18.  Do you think eating dirt as a child will cause any serious side effects later on in life?

This sounds like a trick question… you mean that wasn’t dirt?

19.  Star Wars or Spaceballs?

Definitely Spaceballs! It’s right up there with Office Space and the one of my favorites here lately, Mr. Woodcock.

20.  Why did you accept this interview?

I love reading about myself! Seriously, I have enjoyed your blog for several months now and love your style of writing. It is very engaging and entertaining to say the least. When I got your email on the subject a few weeks ago, I couldn’t wait to get the questions from you!

Mark’s blog is one of my favorites to read, and I hope you guys take the time to stop by TheNicheStoreBuilder if you haven’t already.  To get an idea of his tutorials in action, I would stop by a recent post he did on using Wordtracker and the Google Adwords Tool to find targeted keywords and content for your niche site.

Who’s the next victim?  I have no idea!  I guess it’s time for me to start sending out some more threatening emails…

Cheers,

Elijah

Site Flipping Madness – The Cherry Popping Report

Site Flipping MadnessI’m back and ready to rock!  I made a conscious effort to take this weekend to relax and unwind with Veronica, and we did just that.  Friday night we went with some friends to see a Bedouin Soundclash show, Saturday we spent the entire day in bed watching television, and Sunday we went out for a great lunch and impulsively bought another laptop.  Sweet!

Before I get into my site flip report, I just want to say how much Veronica and I appreciate the support from each and every one of you.  Your words of encouragement really kept me going over this last week, and a few of you even went as far as emailing me personally and sharing tips and tricks you’ve picked up through your own site flipping experiences.  I’m not going to mention names, but just know that I know who you are, and I want you to know that the kindness will be reciprocated at the first opportunity.  I never forget!

Time for the report…

If any of you are just tuning in, last week I challenged myself to generate $84.85 (the money Veronica and I spent on groceries) by the end of day September 15th – this was shortly after I posted a minor freakout with regards to never following through, and my fear of failure with making money online.  After a few adjustments I ended up taking the route of building a blog, getting it indexed in Goolge for a high search/low competition key phrase, and then posting it up on the Sitepoint Marketplace in hopes that someone would have an interest and purchase it.

After conducting some ninja research with the best keyword tool in the universe, Wordtracker, I decided I would base the site around the competitive, but super profitable Tattoo niche – with my golden key phrase being Russian Mafia Tattoos.  Why did I choose that key phrase?  Well to put it plainly, Wordtracker told me to.  That particular phrase has over 600 searches per day in Google, with less than 1100 competing websites listed in Google and this means two things – it won’t be too difficult to get on the front page of Google because the competition isn’t that fierce, and 600 searches per day is a great number in terms potential organic traffic should I get the number 1 spot.

So what happened?

I posted the auction up on Friday at 3:36 pm with a $0 minimum bid, a $97 reserve and a Buy Now price of $127 – which is higher than my initial $84.85 goal.  At 5:47 pm I received an email from Sitepoint notifying me that my auction had been won!  Not only did I sell the site in under 3 hours, it was purchased at the Buy Now price which means there was zero bidding going on.  I was so shocked when I got the email that I called Veronica, who was on her way home from work, and starting laughing frantically like a Priest who accidentally walked into the “little girls room” at Bible Camp.

(Insert uncomfortable pause for those who are sensitive)

Here is everything I did spread over 4 days, from beginning to finish:

Day ONE

  1. Logged into Wordtracker’s Keyword Researcher Tool and conducted a search using the keyword “Tattoos”
  2. Filtered the results to list from the highest to lowest KEI – or the most to the least profitable
  3. Chose the term “Russian Mafia Tattoos” which has the 3rd highest KEI, because my best friend Dmitri is Russian and I thought it would be fun to school him on his own history.
  4. Went to Godaddy.com and searched for RussianMafiaTattoos.com – it was available so I bought it and pointed the DNS servers to my Hostgator account.

Day TWO

  1. Called J-Weezy from SuiteJ.com, told him about the domain I purchased and asked him as many questions as I could regarding flipping sites, increasing value, transactional procedure and writing a killer sales letter/auction page – if you need to learn about site flipping go to his blog and get reading.
  2. Logged onto Skype and started trading links to old school hip hop videos with SutieJ via the instant messaging feature.
  3. 3 hours later I realized how unproductive we were being and told him I had to go get some work done.  Once he was finished crying I logged off of Skype and began searching for WordPress themes.
  4. After sifting through a few I decided to go with a super functional theme by Alexandru Cosmin.
  5. I logged into my cPanel admin and installed WordPress on RussianMafiaTattoos.com.  I uploaded the theme and all my ninja plug ins using Filezilla, activated everything, and configured the settings to my liking.
  6. I immediately began researching the Russian Mafia, and collecting Russian Mafia Tattoo images in a folder for use on the site.
  7. I wrote 12 key phrase focused posts for the site and post-dated the settings to publish two per day – one at 10 am and then again at 10 pm spread them out over the following 6 days.

Day THREE

  1. I wrote a 300+ word article, using my key phrase in the title and strategically throughout the content, and submitted it to 4 high traffic, high ranking article directories.
  2. I created a medium sized Squidoo lens based around my topic.
  3. Using Adobe Fireworks I created a custom logo, affiliate banner, and favicon icon for the site, and replaced the default images which were provided.
  4. I went to Clickbank, gathered my affiliate links and banners, and incorporated them skillfully throughout the site.  I also set up my adsense and incorporated the code into the posts and sidebar.
  5. I created a Myspace page for the site, and put a few posts in the blog section with links.
  6. I submitted the site to a handful of social bookmarking sites, and a few blog directories.  You can visit the sales page for more details on which ones.
  7. I found a few do-follow blogs in the same niche and spent some time commenting on their posts.

Day FOUR

  1. I realized I had the number 1, 2, and 5 spot on the first page in Google for “Russian Mafia Tattoos” in quotes and the number 5 and 6 spots for the same term without quotes.
  2. I created an account on Sitepoint.com, and started studying some auctions and sales pages that I liked and began to construct my own.
  3. I almost finished the best sales page ever written and accidentally clicked on a link that took me away from the page (which was saved) and I had to start all over again.
  4. I contemplated throwing my laptop through the window.
  5. I proceeded to finish the sales page, take the necessary screenshots, and post up the auction.

Wow, that was a lot longer than I anticipated.

I don’t feel like writing anymore.  I’ll finish up my thoughts later.

Cheers,

Elijah

Site Flipping Madness – Bum Marketing Update 837

Hey guys.

I don’t have too much to say right now except that I’m exhausted, and would have preferred to do a video post but I can’t find the SD card for my digi cam – dammit Veronica!  Anyways, I have successfully flipped my niche blog and it is now live and active on the Sitepoint Marketplace.  I’m nervous, tired, and accomplished all in one breath.  This was a great experience and I look forward to my next flip, but first things first..

I’m going out tonight to see the Bedouin Soundclash in concert – for those of you who’ve never heard of them they are a local ska band from Toronto who rock with good vibrations.  Check them out.

Time to get drunk.

Cheers,

Elijah
